Health & warmth
An excessively hot house can cause several health problems. Here are some ways excessive indoor heat can affect health:
- Dehydration: High temperatures can lead to excessive sweating, which can result in dehydration if sufficient fluids are not taken in.
- Heatstroke: This is a serious condition that can occur when the body becomes unable to regulate its temperature. Symptoms may include dizziness, nausea, headache and loss of consciousness.
- Sleep disorders: Too warm an environment can make it difficult to fall asleep or sleep through, leading to fatigue and reduced daytime performance.
- Exacerbation of chronic conditions: People with chronic conditions such as heart disease, respiratory problems and diabetes may be especially affected by high temperatures, which can worsen their symptoms.
- Heat exhaustion: This is a less severe form of heat-related illness, but can still be dangerous. Symptoms include profuse sweating, weakness, fatigue, dizziness and nausea.
- Increased humidity: A warm environment can also lead to increased humidity, which can promote mould growth and cause respiratory problems, especially in people with asthma or allergies.
